Portland String Quartet in Sunday Concert
Belfast — The Portland String Quartet will perform Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at First Church UCC, 8 Court St. on the corner of Court and Spring streets. There is no admission fee; Sunday Concerts are free with an opportunity to donate.
The quartet features Paul Ross, Julia Adams, Steve Kecskemethy and Ronald Lantz. the Portland String Quartet has been performing, teaching and recording with its founding members since 1969. In 1986, they were proclaimed Maine Treasures and awarded honorary Doctor of Music degrees at Colby College in Waterville, where they served as Artists in Residence for 20 years.
The New York Times has described the Portland String Quartet as a model of experienced ensemble playing; in Maine, tickets to their concerts are often $20, so the Sunday Concerts series is offering a rare opportunity. The program will include the Quartet in D Major, Op. 5 by John Knowles Paine, born in 1839 in Portland and student of the famous Portland organist and teacher Hermann Kotzschmar; Quartet No. 1 by Rockland native Walter Piston; and the Quartet in B-flat, Op. 18, No. 6 by Ludwig van Beethoven.
