Tuesday, March 4, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., the Dan Rich Public Safety building will be open for voting. You will be voting for Selectmen, Budget Advisory Committee and the RSU#20 School Board. You will also be voting (yes or no) to file a petition for withdrawal with the Board of Directors of Regional School Unit #20 and the Commissioner of Education, authorizing the withdrawal committee to expend up to $500.00 and authorizing the Searsport Board of Selectmen to issue notes in the name of the Town of Searsport in an amount not to exceed $15,000.00 for this purpose with funds to be drawn from the town's general surplus funds.
Voting yes does not mean we have withdrawn from RSU#20. Yes means we file the petition and set up a withdrawal committee of four. One member will be from the municipal officers, one member will be from the general public, one member will be from the group filing the petition and one member will be from the RSU#20 Board of Directors representing Searsport. This committee will follow a series of steps and time tables that will take them to August or later. The final vote for withdrawal will most likely coincide with a statewide election (November?). At this point, the voters will have a very clear idea of what the withdrawal will look like.
I will be giving you the results of all of Searsport's votes late Tuesday night.
