Rail Trail opens with 5k on Trails Day

May 09, 2017

Belfast — Celebrate the official opening of the Belfast Rail Trail on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 3, by participating in the first 5k at 9 a.m., sponsored by Bank of America and organized by Coastal Mountains Land Trust.

The 5k is open to the whole community for a run, walk or stroll — with dogs on leash and baby strollers welcome. The course out and back is 3 miles long with the turnaround just before the trestle bridge. The start and finish are under the Route 1 bridge.

Interested participants are encouraged to register in advance at coastalmountains.org until May 31. Event parking will be available at Penobscot McCrum. Look for white tents to check in. Day-of registration will begin at 8 a.m.

The Belfast Rail Trail was a joint project of Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the City of Belfast with many local residents donating to make it a reality. There will be an official ribbon-cutting to open the trail just before the race begins.
