Rain alters schedule for MPA state singles playersOceanside's Cam Butler qualifies for Round of 48
Rain reigned havoc on high school student-athletes from Knox, Waldo and part of Lincoln counties as the Maine Principals' Association state singles tennis qualifiers began — for some — on Saturday, May 17 at locations throughout the state.
On Saturday, boys from Oceanside, Camden Hills and Medomak Valley took part in the Region 3 qualifier indoors at the A-Copi indoor tennis facility in Augusta, as six competed and one advanced.
Girls from Camden Hills and Medomak Valley were slated to play Saturday, but the Region 3 qualifier was moved to Tuesday, May 20 at Mount Ararat High School in Topsham.
Belfast boys and girls players, who compete in Region 2, will play their matches on Wednesday, May 21 at one of four Bangor-area high schools: Bangor, Brewer, Hermon or Hampden Academy.
Oceanside's Cam Butler, who was seeded in the tournament, won the only match he played and qualified for the upcoming state singles tournament, which will begin on Friday, May 30 at Colby College in Waterville.
Mariners Nate Philbrook and Eli Thorbjornson also competed, but ultimately did not qualify for the Round of 48. Results for Oceanside players' matches were unavailable.
Camden Hills' Matt Morse finished 1-1 and did not qualify as he beat Lyric Daigle of Skowhegan, 8-6; and lost to Nick Gorey of Boothbay, 5-8.
Medomak Valley's Ezra Hinkley and Aaron Smeltzer both went 0-1 and did not qualify. Hinkley was downed by Erskine Academy's Dominic Pizzo, 5-8, and Smeltzer lost to Cony's Brad Beeckel, 4-8.
