Rainy 'Pancake' 5K run/walk attracts 51 before breakfast

Rumery, Dube prove fastest on 3.1-mile journey across city streets

Belfast — The much needed rain finally came to Waldo County on Sunday morning, Oct. 9, but it could not dampen the spirits of those who participated in the 23rd annual "Pancake" 5-kilometer run/walk.

The event was the third and final in a series of 5K races hosted by the Belfast Rotary Club each year.

The event, which attracted 51 finishers, began and ended at Belfast Area High School.

Shawn Rumery, 30, of Belfast was the winner, crossing the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes and 55 seconds. Parker Simon, 25, of Blue Hill, finished second at 18:09.

Cecilia Dube, 34, of Winterport, was the first female finisher, as she crossed in 20:58 for sixth overall.

The other events hosted by Belfast Rotary during the year are the "Kilted Canter" in July and 'Bug Run' in August.
