Raising children series offered free to public

Sep 28, 2012

Camden — Stepping With The Stones Preschool in Camden will sponsor a series of presentations by parenting specialist and counselor, Judith H. Orme. The Family Series on Raising Children will include three one-hour presentations.

All free to the general public.

“Bette and I are excited to sponsor these three presentations on family matters and raising children. This is the first of a series of presentations we’ll offer at no cost to the Midcoast Maine community. We hope that parents, grandparents, teachers, and other leaders will join us and the talented Judith Orme. Our first series of presentations – The Family Series on Raising Children – relates to raising children by developing better communication skills," said Jerry Stone, founder and director of Stepping With The Stones Preschool.

The first session, Understanding Behavior, will help parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers understand behavior as our clue. In examining the different criteria affecting children's, and parent's, behavior this brief overview will address how to the very root of the problem. Temperament – the “how” of behavior and the nine criteria that shape the child’s personality – will be discussed.

The second installment, Communication Strategies: What’s love got to do with it?, will focus on how gender, culture, family backgrounds, and temperament influence how one communicates — both positively and negatively. The presentation demonstrates how learning effective strategies and conflict mediation helps shift family dynamics when misunderstandings, conflict, and contentious interactions are present in these closest of relationships.

The third session, Power Struggles to Problem Solving: Transforming Conflict Into Cooperation, focuses on how parents can give children the power they want while maintaining appropriate discipline; how power struggles can be avoided when children are demanding or defiant; and how balance and cooperation can be achieved. This presentation will provide an overview for making real change in connective communication and problem solving for everyday parenting.

All three presentations in the series will take place at the Camden Lions Club at 10 Lions Lane in Camden from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Understanding Behavior will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 9; Communication Strategies: What’s love got to do with it? will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 18; and Power Struggles to Problem Solving: Transforming Conflict Into Cooperation will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 25.
