Reserve your seat for Belfast Co-op's Thirty Acre Farm tour
On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Belfast Co-op is sponsoring a trip to visit family-owned and operated Thirty Acre Farm in Whitefield. Transportation will be provided by Waldo CAP, departing from the Belfast Co-op at 12:30 p.m. and returning by 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required; seating is limited.
Simon and Jane Frost will guide this tour of their small, organic, family farm, which includes a land-clearing pig herd and commercial kitchen, where more than 20,000 lbs. of sauerkraut, ruby kraut, kimchi, gingered carrots and sour dill pickles are produced annually. There will be plenty of time for questions and an opportunity to purchase their lacto-fermented products.
When Simon and Jane Frost bought their farm in the fall of 2004, it had not been worked for more than 40 years, and the old pastures had returned to mixed hardwood forest. They purchased three piglets to help clear the land, two of which became the base of their breeding herd. Their pig herd has helped them clear eight acres, five of which are now in vegetable, herb and flower production.
In 2002 they began producing and selling lacto-fermented foods from biodynamic cabbage bought in Canada. They have since built a commercial kitchen and more than double their production each year, growing more than 95 percent of the ingredients.
This tour will provide opportunities to explore their farm, meet their pig herd and visit their commercial kitchen with plenty of time for questions. There will also be an opportunity to purchase lacto-fermented products to take home.
Pre-register at any register at the Belfast Co-op. The cost is $10 to help cover transportation. You can also reserve a seat by phone using a debit or credit card by calling (207) 338-2532. The community-owned Belfast Co-op, located at 123 High Street in downtown Belfast, is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. All are welcome.
