Rockland — Nearly 200 people, young and old, ran or walked their way into a glorious early-Spring Sunday morning and, in the meantime, found a unique way to begin their Mother's Day celebration.

There was a large turnout of participants — 145 runners/walkers and 40 supporters — in the annual Oceanside All-Sports Boosters-sponsored Mariner Mother's Day 5-Kilometer Road Race May 11.

The 3.1-mile event, held in warm, breezy conditions, began and ended at Oceanside East High School.

Peter Heslam, 47, of Newburyport, Mass. finished first overall in 19:17, with Darren Winchenbach, 32, of Auburn second at 19:38. Kerry Kelley, 23, of Rockland was the first female to cross the course, third overall in 20:08.

There also was a free children's fun run, for those ages 10 and younger, around the school to start the morning's festivities. That event drew 20 children.

The 5K course worked its way around the streets in the middle of Rockland, with much of the trek focused on Broadway.

Medals were given to the top male and female finishers, in addition to the top finishers in each age group. Awards also were given to all children who participated in the fun run.

In the children's race around the school, which was 3/10ths of a mile, Natalie Bolduc, 6, of Appleton and Maddox Robishaw, 8, of South Thomaston finished first at 2:47.
