Saco tops Westbrook for state Little League 10-11 championship

Baseball: Holbrook edges Augusta in consolation final in Waldoboro-based event

Waldoboro — Some of the finest youth baseball in Maine was played in the Midcoast as Waldoboro  hosted the state Little League 10- and 11-year-old all-star baseball tournament.

Sukeforth Field was busy for the five days of the tournament, which began July 28 and concluded Aug. 1.

The first three days of the tournament for the six participating teams was pool play, with the four remaining teams moving onto the semifinals July 31.

At the conclusion of pool play July 30, Holbrook (District 3), Saco (District 4), Augusta (District 5) and Westbrook (District 6) advanced to the July 31 semifinal round, while Ellsworth (District 1) and Waldo County (District 2) were eliminated.

In Tuesday's semifinals, Westbrook defeated Holbrook 11-0 in five innings and Saco beat Augusta 10-0 in four innings.

That meant Westbrook (3-1) and Saco (3-1) faced off for the state title on Aug. 1, while Holbrook (2-2) and Augusta (2-2) met in the consolation final the same day.

When the dust had settled Wednesday, Saco had beaten Westbrook 8-5 for the state title and Holbrook outlasted Augusta 11-10 in the consolation final.

The following is a recap of the five days of tourney play:

Championship: Saco 8, Westbrook 5

At Waldoboro Aug. 1, despite Westbrook taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Saco rallied for eight runs over the final six innings to secure the victory and the state crown.

Saco, which had 10 hits and no errors, scored single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings and five in the fifth. Westbrook, which finished with 11 hits and no fielding miscues, tallied four runs in the first and one in the third.

Saco won thanks to its strong bats and never-quit attitude. Michael Bourgault ripped a grand slam home run in the fifth stanza and also cracked a solo homer in the second and a triple in the fourth to account for six of his team's eight runs batted in.

Luke Chessie and Brogan Searle-Belanger pitched for Saco, while Will Shibles worked the bump for Westbrook. Searle-Belanger earned the victory.

For Saco, Bourgault had three hits and Chessie two, while for Westbrook, Tanner LaFlamme and Kyle Champagne were repeat hitters.

Consolation final: Holbrook 11, Augusta 10

At Waldoboro Aug. 1, there were plenty of runners who crossed the plate in the game, as Holbrook tallied six in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth en route to the win. Holbrook finished with eight hits and one error. Augusta, which had seven hits and one fielding miscue, scored four in the first, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Jacob Miller earned the pitching win for Holbrook, while Mitchell McFarland took the loss. Jacob Monroe also pitched for Holbrook and Mitchell Tarrio worked the hill for Augusta.

For Augusta, Isaac Copage cracked two doubles and Tarrio and Noah Dumas also finished with two-baggers. There were no repeat hitters or extra-base hitters for Holbrook.

Saco 10, Augusta 0 (4 inns.)

At Waldoboro July 31, Saco pounded out 14 hits and scored two runs in both the first two innings and six in the third en route to the win. Anthony Bracamonte pitched the win for Saco, while Reed Hopkins took the loss for Augusta, which finished with one hit.

Pacing Saco at the plate were Michael Bourgault (2 doubles), Bracamonte (double, triple), Hunter Penley (double), Luke Chessie (double) and Brogan Searle-Belanger  (home run). Chessie finished with three hits and Penley, Searle-Belanger, Andrew DeGeorge and Bourgault all two.

Augusta made the lone fielding error of the game.

Westbrook 11, Holbrook 0 (5 inns.)

Westbrook rolled to the victory using a seven-hit attack, while scoring one run in the first inning, five in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth for the victory. Holbrook finished with three hits and two errors.

Michael Young and Will Shibles pitched for Westbrook and Matt Cunningham and Nick Lakeman for Holbrook. Young picked up the win and Cunningham suffered the loss.

Eli Higgins and Josh Rowe were repeat hitters for Westbrook, while Kyle Champagne, Higgins and Rowe had doubles and Rowe a triple.

Augusta 6, Ellsworth 0

At Waldoboro July 30, Augusta mustered only one hit, but scored six second-inning runs and eliminated Ellsworth from the tournament. Michael Boivin got the win on the hill for Augusta, while Matt Burnett was tagged with the loss for Ellsworth.

Tyler Mitchell doubled to lead Ellsworth's four-hit attack. Augusta committed two fielding errors.

Saco 11, Waldo County 1 (4 inns.)

At Waldoboro July 30, Saco poured on the runs early and often and eliminated Waldo County from the tournament. Luke Chessie got the win on the hill for Saco, while Garrett Butler suffered the loss for Waldo County.

Leading Saco at the plate were Brogan Searle-Belanger (2 doubles), Hunter Penley (home run, single), Michael Bourgault (home run), Chessie (2 singles) and Andrew DeGeorge (2 singles). George Dakin had two singles to lead Waldo County.

Westbrook 10, Waldo County 0 (4 inns.)

At Waldoboro July 29, Westbrook scored three runs in both the second and third innings and then walked off with the mercy-rule victory with a four-run fourth frame. Eli Higgins got the win on the hill for Westbrook, while Cole Frey was tagged with the loss for Waldo County.

Leading Westbrook at the plate were Herbert (2 doubles), Kyle Champagne (double, single), Cam Morrison (double) and Derek Corbett (double), while George Dakin (double) led Waldo County.

Holbrook 22, Ellsworth 5

At Waldoboro July 29, leading 12-5 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Holbrook opened the floodgates with a 10-run frame and rolled to its first win of the tourney. Preston Weatherbie got the win on the hill for Holbrook, while Matt Perconti suffered the loss for Ellsworth.

Weatherbie and Jared Smith both rapped two hits to lead Holbrook, while Conner Wagstaff doubled and singled to lead Ellsworth. Holbrook outhit Ellsworth 7-5, while both squads combined to make nine fielding errors.

Augusta 3, Holbrook 1

At Waldoboro July 28, Augusta broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of fifth-inning insurance runs and held off Holbrook late to win its first game of the tournament. Mitchell Tarrio got the win on the mound for Augusta, while Colby Miller took the loss.

Leading Holbrook at the plate were Nick Lakeman (triple, single) and Miller (double). Augusta scored three runs on only two hits to secure the win.

Westbrook 6, Saco 4

At Waldoboro July 28, Westbrook scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fifth innings, which proved enough to pick up the win in the opening game of the tournament.

Will Shibles earned the pitching win for Westbrook, while Searle-Belanger took the loss.

Leading Westbrook at the plate were Herbert (2 doubles) and Higgins (double, single), while Penley (home run, double) and Bourgault (double) paced Saco.
