Richmond — Going up against not only an opponent one has never faced in the postseason, let along an unbeaten one, can be a daunting task.

That was a lesson learned by the Searsport softball team on Saturday, June 14 as the No. 4 Vikings traveled to face top-seeded and defending state champion Richmond in a Western Class D semifinal playoff encounter.

The Bobcats plated six runs in the first inning and never looked back as they surged to a 16-4 victory in six innings via the mercy rule.

Searsport's season wrapped up at 9-9.

Richmond (15-0) moves on to the Western Class D championship game slated for Wednesday, June 18 at St. Joseph's College in Standish. The Bobcats will face No. 3 Greenville (13-5) for the regional crown.

Greenville defeated No. 2 Vinalhaven/North Haven 11-3 in another semifinal game on Monday, June 16.

Melinda Ogden singled and doubled to lead Searsport. Brittany Ward walked 10 batters in the pitching circle for the visitors.

Leading the Bobcats at the plate were Kelsea Anair (2 singles), Camryn Hurley (2 singles) and Meranda Martin (2 triples, single).

Searsport defeated No. 5 Buckfield (8-7) 4-3 in a quarterfinal playoff game June 12.

Additional information on Saturday's playoff game was unavailable.
