Seacoast Security golf tourney entry deadline approachesThree-day, three-course, 54-hole, late-June event only $75 — for now
With the Seacoast Security Classic golf tournament scheduled for the end of June, the deadline to register to participate approaches for this new event with an old, somewhat historic, Midcoast flavor.
The Seacoast Security Classic, the next generation of the former Knox County Amateur Championships held in the 1980s and 1990s, is slated for Friday through Sunday, June 27-29.
The 54-hole, three-day, three-course competitive individual stroke play event will be contested at the Samoset Resort Golf Club in Rockport, Goose River Golf Club in Rockport and Rockland Golf Club.
The cost to play the three Midcoast courses in the tourney is $75 if one is registered by the end of Friday, June 13. Normally, it would cost one, not in the tourney, nearly $225 to play 18 holes on each of the participating courses.
One can enter the tourney by mailing the following information to event director Bob Carter, P.O. Box 254, Warren, Maine 04864: Name, address, city, date of birth, handicap index, club affiliation and email address. Include a $75 check.
Carter also can be reached by phone at 273-3471 or by email at email@example.com.
The tourney will be limited to 100 golfers, said Carter. The event's major sponsor is Seacoast Security, while Courier Publications/VillageSoup is the media sponsor.
The application for entry into the tournament also is available on the VillageSoup websites and in the Courier Publication newspapers — The Courier-Gazette, The Camden Herald and The Republican Journal.
Although it will be played on three Knox County courses, the event is open to all golfers, regardless of which course they play or from what area of the state they reside.
The individual tournament for men and women expects to give back up to $3,000 in prizes awarded to both gross and net participants. Prizes will be awarded by flights, including A, B, C and D for men and women. There will be additional awards for seniors and juniors.
The entry fee of $75 covers a golfer's play for all three rounds at the courses and entry into the post tourney banquet. Cart fees are not included in the entry fee and additional banquet tickets may be purchased for $15 per ticket.
Pins, skins and sweeps will be available each day at the courses and are not included in the entry fee.
The entry deadline is Friday, June 13. Entries after that day will be accepted at a $100 rate until Friday, June 20.
The plan is for all golfers to play the Goose River on Friday, June 27, Rockland on Saturday, June 28 and finish at the Samoset on Sunday, June 29. The banquet will be in the Sandbagger's Cafe in the RGC clubhouse as soon as the tourney concludes about mid-afternoon on the final day.
Carter said the professionals at the courses — Jim Blanchette at Goose River, Keenan Flanagan at Rockland and Gary Soule at Samoset — were eager to be involved in the event, especially since the tourney will bring plenty of golfers to each individual course on only one day of the three-day event.
All entrants must have a verifiable handicap index. Tee times, which will be arranged by the tourney committee, will be utilized.
Carter said the flight handicap cutoffs will be: A Flight, 0-10.5; B Flight, 10.6 to 18.5; C Flight, 18.6 to 25.5; and D Flight, 25.6 and higher. Juniors will be those ages 18 and younger and seniors those 60 and older.
Carter said he anticipates, depending on the number of golfers who register, A and B Flight players may play together as will C and D Flight players.
Carter said the tourney plans to make a donation to Knox County Humane Society and PAWS Animal Adoption Center.
