Monroe — The Midcoast Cal Ripken Minor League baseball playoff games were contested June 9 and, when all was said and done, Searsmont Blue came out on top — for the third straight year.

The first semifinal playoff game saw No. 1 Searsmont Red, coached by John Tibbetts and Charles Barfield, defeat No. 4 Waldo, coached by Kelly Jacobs, Brent Moulton and Bob Cartier, 9-1.

The second semifinal playoff game was between No. 2 Searsmont Blue, coached by Jason Fuller, Shane Gerrish and Aaron Fuller, and host Monroe, coached by Don Nickerson and Ed Lepore. The hard-fought battle was decided in the bottom of the final inning with Searsmont Blue picking up three runs to win 10-9.

That set the stage for an all-Searsmont championship game.

In the final, Searsmont Red took a 2-1 first-inning lead with a double by Jesse Kulbe, which drove home Peter Linscott and Lucas Walker. Searsmont Blue had a strong second inning with five runs to give it a 6-2 advantage. With neither team scoring in the third inning, Searsmont Blue then picked up four more runs in the fourth, which was countered by Aiden Pike stealing home for Red. That proved the final run for Searsmont Red.

The Minor League championship was won for the third straight year by Searmont Blue, this time with a 12-3 decision over Searsmont Red.

Previous championship victories by Searsmont Blue over Winterport and Unity were overshadowed by this season's all-Searsmont title game. "With the continued support from the coaches, parents and the community, baseball in Searsmont will continue to be competitive for years to come," said Patricia Fuller.
