Searsport has talent to realize Western Class D playoff goal

By Staff | Dec 11, 2013

Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Searsport District High School girls basketball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Mel Grant, third year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 7-11, 15th in Eastern Class C. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Alicen Brooks (5-foot 6-inch guard/forward), Kelli Gibbs (5-4 guard), Briana Grant (5-6 guard/forward), Libby Lane (5-6 forward), Allison Walker (5-5 guard/forward) and Ida Eriksson (5-5 guard/forward); juniors Brittany Ward (5-4 guard) and Brianna Boyle (5-6 forward); sophomores Melinda Ogden (guard/forward), Anna Bucklin (5-5 guard/forward) and Kaitlyn Shute (5-5 guard); and freshmen Karigen Coffin (5-3 guard) and Paige Ireland (5-3 guard).

Known graduation losses: None.

Significant impact players: Grant, Shute, Ogden, Bucklin, Gibbs and Brooks.

Team strengths: Experience, talent, desire and depth.

Team goals: The make the Western Class D playoffs and “see where it goes from there.”

Top league opponents: Forest Hills of Jackman and Rangeley.

Outlook: The Vikings are a year older, wiser and better as they look to make a significant jump in their first go-round in Western Class D. Searsport returns Grant and Shute, both of whom missed last season with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Grant was the team's leading scorer as a freshman and sophomore, while Shute “is a very athletic girl who can run and jump with the best out there,” said coach Grant, Briana's father.

Ogden, Bucklin, Ward and Gibbs filled in nicely for Searsport last season, and that experience gained should bode well for the Vikings this year.

The Vikings will play predominately an Eastern Class C schedule and look to make noise at the Augusta Civic Center in the Western Class D playoffs in February.
