Belfast — Police arrested a Searsport man May 16 and charged him for assaulting and attempting to kidnap a woman and their child.

Jason C. Moulton, 34, of Searsport, was arrested and charged with burglary, domestic violence assault, violation of a protection order, violating condition of release and kidnapping, Sgt. John Gibbs of Belfast Police Department said.

The charges stem from an incident that began when Moulton allegedly entered the woman's home and forced her and their child to get into a vehicle. While in the vehicle, Moulton allegedly struck the woman several times, Gibbs said.

A neighbor called police to report the incident and responding officers intercepted and stopped the vehicle, allowing the woman to escape, the sergeant said. Gibbs said he did not know the extent of any injuries the woman may have suffered as a result of the alleged assault.

Moulton is scheduled to appear in court in July.
