Searsport planning hazardous waste disposal day for fallSelectmen discuss ways to keep local business from relocating
Searsport — The Town of Searsport will hold its first household hazardous waste event since 2010 this fall.
Searsport Selectmen authorized town manager James Gillway during the July 1 meeting to use money from the current Transfer Station budget to pay for the disposal of hazardous waste found around people's homes in Searsport.
Gillway said the last time the town held a similar clean up it cost $3,150 and the company that helped put on the event said it would charge the same for the event this year. The charge is $2,200 plus $25 per gallon of waste chemicals.
Gillway said the event would include a large amount of public education and that the town was hoping citizens would clean out sheds, garages and basements to remove old chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides that may have been forgotten on a shelf. The disposal will be free for Searsport residents, but will require a pre-registration of the type of chemicals that will be disposed of.
Gillway said he has not determined an exact date for the event, but said it would likely be in early fall.
Options for retaining boat building business
Selectman Jack Merrithew brought up the planned departure of O'Donovan and Dole Traditional Wooden Boatworks from Searsport during his selectman's report July 1.
Merrithew said he talked to the owners, who were pursuing relocating their business to Belfast according to previously published reports, about staying in Searsport. Merrithew said he suggested a number of possible locations in Searsport the business could move to, including one near Hamilton Marine Supply, which he said he thought would be beneficial to their business.
Other selectmen mentioned the establishment of a Tax Increment Financing district to help the business if it was interested.
Merrithew said he thought the owners seemed interested in the Searsport properties, but could not say whether they might change their mind about relocating to Belfast.
