High school golf

Searsport small in numbers, but individually solid

By Staff | Sep 05, 2014

Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Searsport District High School golf team:

Coach/years coached current team: Rudy Carroll, third year.

Last year's record/playoff information: Finished regular season with a 3-3 record. Searsport shot an 18-hole, four-golfer stroke total of 482 at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships and, thus, did not qualify for the state Class C championships.

Roster: Seniors Alex Woodward, Rica Warren, Tyler Kendall and John Guerette; and freshman Makenna Woodward and Devyn Talgo.

Known graduation losses: None.

Significant impact golfer: Warren.

Team strengths: Experience, dedication and sportsmanship.

Team goals: To improve on last year's individual scores, which will, in turn, lower team scores.

Top league opponents: Houlton, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln and Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Outlook: The Vikings do not have much roster flexibility with five golfers, as the top four can score in each match. However, assistant coach Gerry French said the Vikings “will be a team that will perform to a higher level than some of our opponents realize.”

Last season the Vikings had eight golfers, but three underclassmen chose not to join the team this fall.

Searsport will look to its seniors to lead the team, particularly Warren, who qualified for the schoolgirl state championships last fall and also qualified to play in the New England Championships during the summer.
