Searsport swept by Stearns in season openers
Searsport — The Searsport District High School baseball and softball teams kicked off their 2014 regular seasons by hosting Stearns of Millinocket in early-afternoon games, April 25.
The Viking baseball team fell to the Minutemen 3-1 during the school spring vacation week contest, while the Vikings softball team also fell to the visitors 17-5.
Stearns 3, Searsport 1
The 2014 regular season for the Vikings started the same way the 2013 campaign ended — with a loss to the Minutemen.
Searsport lost to Stearns in the Eastern Class C quarterfinal playoffs last spring 12-0 in five innings, so Friday's loss to the defending regional champions was a step in the right direction. On Friday, the Vikings scored their lone run in the second inning, while the Minutemen scored one in the third and two more in the fifth.
Leading the Vikings at the plate were Kyle Grant (2 singles, RBI), Jake Powell (2 singles, run), Troy Reynolds (single) and Kyle Moore (single).
For the Minutemen, Zack Bouchard (double, single, 2 RBIs), Mitchel Bradford (single), Kacey McVey (double), Nick Dumas (single, run), Nick Oakes (single, run) and Gary Malcolm (single, run) keyed the offense.
Powell went the distance on the hill for Searsport, allowing seven hits and no walks, with seven strikeouts.
Dumas, Bouchard and Jordan Cullen pitched for Stearns, allowing six hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts.
Searsport got on the board in the second inning on an RBI-single to right field that plated Powell, but Stearns tied the game in the third inning thanks to a pair of Viking fielding miscues.
Bouchard rapped a two-run double in the fifth inning, which proved the difference for the visitors.
Stearns 17, Searsport 5
The Vikings could not keep pace with the Minutemen and fell by 12 runs.
The Vikings scored two runs in the first inning, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Stearns scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and six more in the seventh.
Leading Searsport at the plate were Alivia Cross (run), Libby Lane (2 runs), Brittany Ward (run) and Brianna Boyle (single, run).
For Stearns, Jess Girza (triple, 2 runs), L. Jamo (double, run), C. McLeod (single, 2 runs) and Freddy Hildos (single, run) chipped in on offense.
Brittany Ward walked 14 batters and struck out 10 for the Vikings, while Jess Girza walked two and struck out seven for the Minutemen in work from the pitching circle.
