Sexual Boundaries - Pastor Adam Kohlstrom

Deuteronomy 22:5,13-30; 24:1-4
22:5. God created men and women as distinct and corresponding (Genesis 1:27; 2:18). What distinctions between the sexes do you think should be maintained today?
22:13-30; 24:1-4. Whose power is limited by these laws and thus who do these laws protect? What do these laws reveal to us about God’s concern?
22:13-30; 24:1-4. All these laws apply the seventh commandment: “you shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18). The basic rule in the Bible concerning sexual relations is “No sex outside of one man and one woman in marriage.” What are some practical reasons why this rule is beneficial for people? Why are such reasons unconvincing to today’s society? Since we are not part of the theocratic nation of ancient Israel, the punishment for sexual transgressions has changed, but do you think God’s boundaries for sexual behavior have changed? If so, how? (cf: Mark 7:21; Gal. 5:19-21; Col. 3:5-6; 1Cor. 6:9-11,15-20; 1Thess. 4:1-8; Heb. 13:4)?
22:22 (Ex. 20:14; Dt. 5:18). How does Jesus explain adultery in Matthew 5:27-28? How do you think we should apply His teaching today? In John 8:2-11 Jesus is asked to respond to a clear violation of Deuteronomy 22:22. How do you think Jesus’ response should inform our response to such sins today?
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 lists some of the sins recorded in Deuteronomy 22:13- 30. Notice v.11 is not a verse of condemnation, but of hope: "that is what some of you were" (past tense). Jesus does not condemn people, He condemns sinful behavior (cf. Jn. 8:11). He did not come to condemn us in our sins, but to save us from them (cf. Jn. 3:17). How should this truth inform our response to such sins today?
24:1-4. How does Jesus explain and apply Moses’ instructions regarding divorce in Matthew 19:1-9 and Matthew 5:31-32? How do you think we should apply Jesus’ teaching today?
