Soares pleads not guilty to manslaughter charge
Belfast — Alvaro Soares, the Unity man who is facing a manslaughter charge pleaded not guilty during a brief court appearance Thursday, Jan. 30.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Soares was also charged with operating under the influence involving death, reckless conduct, aggravated driving to endanger and criminal speeding. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The charges stem from a July 4, 2013, incident after Soares was driving towards Thorndike Village when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole. The crash killed Oscar Tizon Brito, 23, of Providence, R.I., and seriously injured Soares' sister, Kelley Soares, of Cranston, R.I., who were passengers in the vehicle.
An initial investigation determined speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. While police did not specify how fast the vehicle was traveling, previous reports indicated Soares was driving well in excess of the posted 30 mph.
Soares is free on $50,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in Waldo County Superior Court April 7.
