Something Else to Do on Election Day
Maine Citizens for Clean Elections in Portland is a nonpartisan organization which had the principal role in the effort to enact Maine’s Clean Election Law by citizen ballot initiative in 1996. Their focus is on the impact of big money in elections.
In Knox County and elsewhere in Maine, volunteers will be at the polls November 6 with petition “post cards” to be sent to our Maine legislators to urge them to pass a resolution in support of a constitutional amendment to remedy the effects of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision. Nine state legislatures have done this so far. Maine and New Hampshire are the only New England states that have not.
This is not a hard sell. Polling indicates that overwhelming majorities of voters of every political persuasion support this movement.
There is a parallel effort in Knox County to collect signatures by town to present to town governing bodies urging them to pass resolutions in support of an amendment as well. Twenty-one municipalities in Maine have done this so far, including most of the largest and others very small.
Please be on the lookout for signature gatherers and think whether you will join this effort to reduce, disclose and add more control to the amount of money raised and spent in our elections.
Voters of any registration who are free on Election Day to spend a few hours at a polling place asking for signatures are urged to send their contact information and hours available as soon as possible to bj@mainecleanelections.org. BJ McCollister will see that that they receive materials and instructions. For more information, please visit www.mainecleanelections.org.
