Rockland — They came to jump, throw, run, roll and represent their teams/schools/organizations. They came to smile, to be with friends, teammates and family and, above all, enjoy a few hours of outdoor fun.

Thus was the annual scenario that played out on Friday, May 5 at Wasgatt Field on Thomaston Street during the Knox-Lincoln-Waldo Special Olympics track-and-field meet.

The event included a few hours of friendly competition for Special Olympians, from young children to older adults.

It also was the final year of the event being held at Wasgatt Field, as it will move to Camden Hills Regional High School in 2018.

On May 5, a bundle of teams/schools/organizations from Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties participated on a cold, overcast early-spring day.

Two usual teams that did not participate were Belfast Area High School and Troy Howard Middle School of Belfast.
