Stockton Springs Community Church is about to place the final Spire section of it’s Historical Landmark Steeple.
The Spire lift is scheduled for Friday October 18th around 10:00 a.m. with Monday the 21st as a rain date.
The Spire section, a 28’ tall- 8 sided section will be placed on top of the Bell section that was set this last summer. This will make the total steeple height from ground to peak 100’+-. Viewable from the intersection of Rt 1/3 & Rt 1A as well as along Rt 1/3 where it has long been a coastal traveler’s landmark. It is also on the NOAA nautical charts as a spire and is a much loved landmark as approached from Penobscot Bay in Stockton Harbor.
This section also includes the beautiful new enlarged replica of the original Weather Vane. This was donated by Janice and Melvin Shute’s Sons as a long standing, visible remembrance of their father Mel, who spent many years on the water as a lobsterman and loved seeing the steeple as he approached his home mooring in Stockton Harbor. Thank you Boys!
Fund raising is now complete. The “Steeple People”, a group of hard working, focused, ladies have raised OVER $250,000, in the last six years, to complete this entire project. This has included removal of the old deteriorated Steeple, building structural repair, an engineering study and the new Steeple costs. Monies raised over the cost of the project are being placed into an account for future Steeple maintenance.
This fund raising has been accomplished without grants from outside sources except for the engineering study. Individuals and businesses from this community and far beyond, from Florida to Texas, to California, have rallied together to make the reconstruction of this Historic masterpiece possible. The entire cost of all of the fund raising events, advertising etc. has been borne by the “Steeple People” and a few other individuals. NO monies for the support of this project have come out of donations or the cost of food etc. at a supper or any event.
