Spotlight on Rockport Dance Conservatory Hip Hop teacher, Katie Thompson!

Katie Thompson has been dancing for over 19 years. She learned core technique, building a base and developing discipline as a child through ballet and tap. She found her niche at 11 years old dancing funky jazz with Annie Laurita. After a couple years of apprenticeship with Ms. Laurita, Katie began teaching contemporary hip hop/ fusion at the YMCA and has continued to do so for 8 years. In high school Katlyn attended the Bates Dance Festival for two summers, where she got deeper into hip hop with worldwide known choreographer and previous Alvin Ailey student Jennifer Archibald.

In 2005, Katie co-directed and co-choreographed a dance show for Camden Shakespeare Company Called “Whose Beat is it Anyway?” the show was a variety of styles including, ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, modern and ballroom. In 2007, she directed and choreographed her own dance show “Klash!” which was also a variety of ballet, hip hop, jazz, modern, contemporary and ballroom. Katie has a deep passion for movement and combining different styles in her choreography. She is also committed to encouraging healthy self esteem in her students through body awareness, dance, and yoga.  This is Katie’s 2nd year teaching at Rockport Dance Conservatory
