State agency recognizes local business, organization with innovation, creativity awards
The Maine Office of Tourism has recognized Belfast-based Pica Design and Marketing and the Friends of Fort Knox with awards for innovation and creativity.
Cassidy Parmley, Pica Design and Marketing's art director, said the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce approached the company about designing their print guide; however, in addition to the print product, Parmley said the company also designed an iPad application with a number of interactive features, such as slideshows and videos.
He said Pica Design and Marketing was selected to receive the Innovation award from the Maine Office of Tourism because of the iPad application.
“It was great for us because we felt really good about what we created,” Parmley said of receiving the Innovation Award and the work the company did on the chamber of commerce guide application.
'Fright at the Fort'
In addition to the award given to Pica Design and Marketing, the annual Halloween event at Fort Knox, “Fright at the Fort,” was selected to receive a Creativity Award.
Held in in October, the annual event transforms Fort Knox into a “bad nightmare designed to put a chill into the bravest of living souls,” as visitors are guided through the dark, fog filled corridors of the fort.
What started in 1999 as a single afternoon event focused on school-age children quickly grew and evolved into a more complex event as organizers attempted to outdo the previous year's exploits.
Friends of Fort Knox Executive Director Leon Seymour said he was pleased the event and the fort are being recognized by the state, and said “Fright at the Fort” has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, which has paid for repairs and enhancements to the fort.
Last year's event paid homage to the Black Plague with visitors traveling back to the 14th century when the plague was ravaging Europe.
“It's a lot of fun and everybody really deserves this award,” Seymour said.
Pica Design and Marketing and the Friends of Fort Knox will be presented with their award during the 2014 Governor's Conference on Tourism March 18-19 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
