StoryWalk kickoff in Unity

Sep 18, 2012

Unity — The public is invited to a StoryWalk kickoff Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Unity Community Center, downtown at 32 School St. A StoryWalk combines love of outdoors, physical activity, family togetherness and literacy development by featuring popular children’s books mounted on sign posts along local public access trails.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. The Unity kickoff event will feature “Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud” by Maine author Lynn Plourde, who will be at the event.

Audrey O’Clair, a family literacy consultant with RSU 3, is the driving force behind the Unity StoryWalk initiative. According to O’Clair, families should be reading at least 20 minutes per day with their children.

“This project provides a fun, engaging way for parents to participate in their children’s early literacy development while enjoying Unity’s beautiful and extensive CommUnity Trails system. We hope that this initial installation is the first of many here in Unity,” O’Clair did.

Seventeen elegant wooden sign posts were locally crafted by Jim Macdonald. Each page from the book is laminated, mounted and installed along the Community Bikeway Trail.

This event is a collaboration of Unity Barn Raisers, Unity College and RSU 3. Unity Barn Raisers oversees the CommUnity Trails system. Unity College provides community service support for the local StoryWalk and its expansion. Funding for the signs was made possible through the RSU 3 Early Literacy Program.

Walkers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes; and to bring a water bottle.
