Strength, high expectations for competition for Mount View
Thorndike — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Mount View High School cheering squad:
Coach/years coached current team: Carol Bryant, seventh year.
Last year's record/playoff information: The Mustangs finished 10th (89.7 points) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships and 13th (93.6) at the Eastern Class B championships.
Roster: Seniors Alyss Crooker, Katie Ross and Lindsey Lizotte; juniors Siiri Pinkham, Alexis Moulton and Mariah Ross; Britni Bryant and Rochelle Porter; and freshmen Shelbe Lane, Kate Walker, LiLi Albright and Liz Clifford.
Outlook: The Mustangs had a down year in the competition season last year, but the sky is the limit for this year's squad.
"We actually have a very strong team this year," said Mustang assistant coach Cynthia Lufkin. "Practices have been going great. You tell the girls something to do, they try it, they do it and they have it. Things have been going very well for us."
Lufkin said the goal for this year's team is to qualify for the state Class B championships, meaning the Mustangs will need to garner a top-six finish at the regional competition.
"That is our goal," she said. "We've hired a choreographer this year and, with the strength we have, we see us having a chance to make it."
Dance and stunting are the team's strengths, while the Mustangs will have to work on their tumbling if they hope to advance to the state competition, the coach said.
Crooker, Lizotte and Ross, all bases, are the team captains this season.
"They're the strength of the group," said Lufkin. "They've cheered all four years of high school and they're very good leaders."
