RUMI POETRY TALK CANCELED

Sufi notions of God, love

May 14, 2014
Michael Craig Hillmann

Belfast — Professor Michael Craig Hillmann will offer a presentation titled Sufi Notions of God and Love in Rumi’s Poetry Tuesday, May 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St. This program, free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the library and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast. THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.

Hillmann, Professor of Persian at the University of Texas, Austin, specializes in Persian poetry and art. He offers courses on Omar Khayyam, Jalaloddin Rumi and Hafez; and Persian carpets.

Hillmann’s presentation will focus on an eight-page handout, available at the program, of a handful of Rumi quatrains; the famous opening passage of his “Masnavi-ye Ma’navi” (Spiritual Couplets); and a handful of his ghazal (sonnet-like lyric) poems. Hillmann will discuss how each of the texts illustrates a different aspect of Rumi's spiritual philosophy and that many people today continue to find relevance and inspiration in his poetry.
