Summer vibe at Flying Shoes contra

Belfast — Playgroup will bring the spirit of summer to the year’s first Belfast Flying Shoes Dance Series event, so get out the beach umbrellas, popsicles and sunscreen … and dancing shoes. The quartet of young Mainers will play for a spirited evening of contra dancing Friday, Jan. 3, at American Legion Post No. 43, 143 Church St. Belfast’s own Chrissy Fowler will be calling dances, with sound provided by Eric Weest Johnson.

Playgroup is really an excuse for a contra dance party. The band brings a classic, vibrant sound to a broad repertoire of dance tunes, delivered with talent, finesse and contagious enthusiasm. Since 2009, Playgroup has played many venues across Maine including regular appearances at the Downeast Country Dance Festival. Band members are Julia Plumb on fiddle, accordion, hurdy-gurdy and foot percussion; Alden Robinson on fiddle; Zachary Davis on tenor banjo, fiddle and percussion; and Abraham Stimson on piano.

What better way to ring in the New Year than with Fowler cheerfully leading left, right and in between to Playgroup’s tunes. Gifted at building community through dance and movement, Fowler will expertly lead all dancers in this spirited traditional New England event.

The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a community dance led by Fowler with music by the All-Comers Band, led by Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in. The contra dance begins at 8 p.m. and runs until around 11 p.m.

Admission for the community dance is $2 for adults and $1 for children. For the contra, the price is $10 for adults (older than age 20); $7 for those age 13 to 20, as well as adult All-Comers; and $4 for children. As always, there is a dollar off admission for every box fan one brings for the windows. For more information, call Fowler at 338-0979 or visit belfastflyingshoes.org.
