Swanville sets date for withdrawal public hearing, referendum vote

Swanville — Swanville has scheduled a public hearing and referendum vote to pursue withdrawal from Regional School Unit 20.

Town Clerk Helen Christianson said town officials scheduled an informational public hearing about withdrawal for Wednesday, Jan. 15. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is being held at the Swanville Town Office, which is located at 6 Townhouse Road.

Christianson said the withdrawal referendum vote will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Swanville is the only remaining town that comprised the former School Administrative District 34 that has yet to vote on withdrawal. The town had scheduled the withdrawal referendum vote for Tuesday, Dec. 17, but had to reschedule because the town had not held a mandated public hearing prior to the scheduled vote.

Belfast, Belmont, Morrill, Northport and Searsmont have all voted to create plans to leave RSU 20.

If residents in Swanville vote to pursue withdrawal from RSU 20, the town must form a committee that includes a municipal officer, a member of the RSU 20 school board, a member of the general public and a member of the petitioner's group.
