The apocalypse comes earlyFright at the Fort, rain or shine
Prospect — The Friends of Fort Knox’s mission is to preserve Fort Knox and enhance its educational, cultural and economic value for the people of Maine. Its annual Halloween fundraiser, however, is aimed at terrifying those who visit the State Historic Site the last two weekends of October.
The 13th annual Fright at the Fort will run Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. (each evening’s last tour begins 8:30 p.m. at the Civil War-era fort located off Route 174. The theme for this year’s annual scarefest is the zombie apocalypse — visitors who travel the dark passageways of the fortification will encounter terrifying creatures, props, sights and sounds. Event organizers say that they are investing twice as much into the production to amp up the fright factor for this year’s offering.
Tickets are $10, $5 for those younger than age 12. To avoid waiting in line, purchase Express Tix in advance for $12 by calling the Friends at 469-6553.
On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21 there will chills and thrills on both sides of the Penobscot River, thanks to Bucksport’s annual Ghostport event, split into two days this year due to the weather. This includes such daytime delights as pumpkin launching, via trebuchet, into the river; activities and a parade for little goblins; a parade of coffins, followed by the Jonathan Bucks Race to the Grave coffin race; spooky stories and cartoons at the Alamo Theatre, as well as a screening of Season I of the web series “Ragged Isle” plus Q&A with the Belfast native filmmakers; a dance; and fireworks, launched from Fort Knox but viewed in Bucksport. There will be a shuttle bus running between the two events from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
