'The First' Summer Solstice 5K races in June 21

Celebrate the longest day of year on run in city's downtown

Rockland — "The First" Summer Solstice 5-Kilometer Road Race, the fourth in the 2014 Go! Malawi race series, will be on Saturday, June 21 at 6 p.m. The start and finish of the race/walk is in the The First's parking lot on 63 Union Street.

The non-profit Go! Malawi continues to raise funds for their education program, which supports orphans and other vulnerable children in rural Malawi, Africa. Primarily the program provides scholarships for students to go to school in Malawi and Maine.

This race will be during the annual Summer Solstice Street Festival on Main Street in Rockland.

Walkers, runners and well-behaved dogs are welcome to participate. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. One also can preregister at RunSignUp.com or Active.com or via go-malawi.org.

The annual 5K race series is organized by local volunteers from Team Go! Malawi. This team consists of local walkers and runners who share a common vision: “To Run With a Purpose, For a Purpose.”

They challenge themselves to be physically fit and to make a positive global change supporting Go! Malawi! They are looking for more team members to join them in their destination marathon or half-marathon in the fall.
