Morrill — A Sysco delivery truck ended up on its side in a swampy ditch Wednesday afternoon after its driver veered onto the road's shoulder.

Hayri Berberoglu II, 57, of Carmel had just made a delivery and at about 1:45 p.m. was driving down Poland Woods Road in Morrill with a mostly empty truck.

"Possible distraction led to him veering to the right," Morrill Fire Chief Pat Scribner said at the scene.

At that point the 10-wheel truck was caught in the shoulder and got sucked off the road, according to Waldo County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Littlefield.

When the first fire truck arrived, Berberoglu was out of the vehicle, with no injuries, Scribner said.

Belfast ambulance also responded to the scene.

Visible damage to the truck included a broken windshield and front fender damage. Scribner said minor oil and fuel leakage was contained with absorbent pads.

At about 3 p.m. two wreckers arrived from All Directions Transport of Hope, one of the few towing companies in the region equipped to tow vehicles of this size.

The road was shut down at 3:10 p.m. while the truck was pulled from the ditch.
