TriSchool One Act Festival
As has become tradition, the high schools of Waldo County will join together to present their Maine Drama Festival one-act plays on their home stages before hitting the road to the regional competition. The three plays will be presented Thursday, Feb. 28 at Searsport District High School, 24 Mortland Road; Friday, March 1, at Belfast Area High School, 98 Waldo Ave.; and Saturday, March 2, at Mount View High School, Route 220 in Thorndike.
All TriSchool One Act Festival performances will start at 6:30 p.m. and admission at the door is $5. Monday, March 4 will serve as snow date for the tour. NOTE: MOUNT VIEW HAD NO SCHOOL FEB. 28 SO CANNOT ATTEND THAT DATE’S SHOW AT SDHS. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY SHOWS WILL GO ON AS SCHEDULED; ON MONDAY, MOUNT VIEW AND SEARSPORT WILL PRESENT THEIR PLAYS AT SDHS.
The Searsport troupe, helmed by Chris Goosman, will present “One And All” by Alan Haehnel, a Vermont playwright. The play, which has both realistic and fantastic elements, focuses on a teenager anxiously preparing for a date that he hopes will end with his first kiss.
Belfast is eschewing contemporary angst for a freewheeling approach to the classics. “The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza” by Don Zolidis, directed by Michael Lawson and Sonja Richardson, promises to offer everything one might want to know about Greek mythology — and some one might not.
Mount View’s troupe, led by Angela Nason, will present "Voices from the Titanic" by Pat Cook, a docu-drama that includes not only passengers and crew of the doomed vessel but also a few members of its orchestra.
In keeping with competition protocol, the plays will attempt to run no longer than 40 minutes each, with five minutes each for set-up and strike. Nine regionals statewide will be held Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9. Belfast, which competes in Class A, will travel to Mount Desert Island High School, while Class B Searsport and Mount View will be part of the Midcoast regional at Oceanside High School in Rockland.
