Belfast — The two best field hockey teams in the Busline League squared off for the championship Monday afternoon, Oct. 21 with a two-goal performance by one player allowing the No. 2 squad to upset the No. 1 team.
No. 2 Troy Howard Middle School outlasted No. 1 Boothbay Elementary School 2-0 in the league final on the Lions' home field.

In the championship game, Hannah Sanderson scored both goals for the winning Lions, while Cassidy Clark added an assist for THMS.
Brooke Richards played in goal for the Lions and Tori Morin in the cage for Boothbay.
Busline League field hockey includes five teams situated from Belfast to Boothbay and, as it turned out, the squads most geographically separate played for the championship at predetermined THMS in Belfast.
For the second straight year, the No. 2 Lions bested the No. 1 team as last year Troy Howard downed Oceanside Middle School of Thomaston/Rockland 1-0. Camden-Rockport Middle School won the league crown two years ago.
The 2013 Lions, coached by Elizabeth Baker and Sara McIntire, include eighth-graders Kaylee Allen, Samantha Hills, Kelsey Mehuren, Kristina Walker, Alia Wallace, Sabrina Wood and Jillian Young; seventh-graders Mackenzie Banks, Lauren Blood, Lindsay Bruns, Cassidy Clark, Maya Cunningham, Gia Davila, Amy Gaiero, Cassie Jackson, Mercedes Philbrook, Makenna Roberts, Hannah Sanderson, Julie Ann Smith, Karagen Stone and Elisabeth Taylor; and sixth-graders Hannah Banks, Kayla Brown, Kayci Faulkingham, Chloe Harvey, Sara Kunesh, Kayla Payson, Lexi Pattee, Brooke Richards, Erica Staples, Mallory Tibbetts and Sierra Walker.
Former Belfast Area High School field hockey coach Allen Holmes, who led the older Lions for 40 years, helped the younger Lions this season as he mowed the field and painted the lines.
Boothbay, coached by Lori Grinnell, includes Page Brown, Elizabeth Ham, Kayla Lewis, Elyse Mead, Sydney Meader, Sydney Mercier, Kylie Michael, Collette Perry, Jo Shaw, Lilly Sherburn, Gabby Staples, Denise Stover, Ashley Abbott, Allyson Barter, Emma Hodgdon, Lexi Lane, Katie Moore, Carina Peaslee, Riley Sullivan, Chloe Aresenault, Maddy Faulkingham, Katie Larson, Ciara Pitcher, Kelsey Poor, Josey Smith, Jackie Steinmetz and Tori Morin.
Earlier in the single-elimination playoffs, No. 1 Boothbay beat No. 3 Oceanside 9-0 and No. 2 Troy Howard outlasted No. 3 Camden-Rockport 2-1 in overtime in semifinal games on Oct. 17. In a prelim game Oct. 16, Oceanside bested No. 5 Great Salt Bay of Damariscotta 2-0.
Troy Howard is a perennial middle school champion and has ruled the top spot in the league for several decades, with Rockland District Middle School (now Oceanside, combined with Thomaston Grammar School) and CRMS also always in the title mix.
