Troy Howard, Midcoast individuals capture regional titles

Middle school mat athletes find success in regional, qualify for final meet

Waldoboro — The Midcoast crowned one team champion and 11 individual titlists, as well as qualified 35 student-athletes to the final league meet next weekend, during the Pine Tree Wrestling League East regional Saturday, March 22 at Medomak Valley High School.

Troy Howard Middle School of Belfast captured the title, outdistancing a strong 14-team field.

The top four finishers in each weight class at the PTWL East and West regionals, each held Saturday, advance to the league's championship meet on Saturday, March 29 at 9 a.m at Cony High School in Augusta.

Additional area athletes are alternates to the final meet.

The PTWL East regional team scores were: Troy Howard Middle School 153.5, Nokomis Middle School of Newport 134.5, Medomak Middle School of Waldoboro 125.5, Oceanside Middle School of Thomaston/Rockland 100.5, Bucksport Middle School 98, Hope-Appleton-Lincolnville 95.5, Camden-Rockport Middle School 85, Mount View Junior High of Thorndike 56, Hancock Area Wrestling Club 55, Winslow Middle School 51, Hampden Middle School 50, Ellsworth Middle School 42.5, Messalonskee of Oakland 41 and Penobscot no score.

Top-four Midcoast student-athletes, all of whom qualified for the states, from Saturday's meet were:

Camden-Rockport —  Mark Tocco (1st at 137 pounds), Brady Hedstrom (2nd at 111), Ian Henderson (3rd at 87), Eben Merrifield (3rd at 170) and Michael Yates (4th at 123). Aiden Aviles is an alternate at 81 pounds, Jayred Robishaw at 117, Alex Vokey at 145 and Alex Davis at 195.

HAL — Eric Andrews (1st at 75 pounds), Noah Lang (1st at 105), Marshall Sawyer (4th at 81), Andrew Kelly (4th at 99), Ben Benson (4th at 117) and Tyler Gerry (4th at 240). Dawson Allen is an alternate at 93 pounds.

Medomak — Duncan Widdecombe (1st at 81 pounds), Eli Miller (2nd at 130), Korbin Daniels (2nd at 155), Erik Benner (3rd at 195), Noah Munn (3rd at 240), Jakob Gess (4th at 105), Jacob Overlock (4th at 111) and Eli Malburg (4th at 137). Shane Cookson is an alternate at 87 pounds, Isaac McCollett at 99 and Amos Hinkley at 170.

Oceanside — Alex Fogarty (1st at 87 pounds), Ben Ripley (1st at 99), Connor McGonagle (1st at 117), Carter Fogarty (3rd at 75) and Alex McLaughlin (3rd at 145). Seth Sweet is an alternate at 123 pounds, Lucien Marriner at 130, Brennan Harris at 137 and Zoe Goff at 240.

Mount View — Mark Ward (1st at 93 pounds), Seth Padelford (2nd at 170) and Toby Pontillo (4th at 195). Nathaniel Fuller is an alternate at 155 pounds.

Troy Howard  — Jacob Racioppi (1st at 130 pounds), Jacob Waterman (1st at 145), Anthony Sanborn (1st at 240), Chase Curry (2nd at 117), David Warren (2nd at 137), Timmy Smith (3rd at 81), Isaac Ham (4th at 87), Patrick Curtis (4th at 93) and Konnor Harford (4th at 170). Hunter Blood is an alternate at 105 pounds and Hunter Thompson at 111.

Carter Fogarty (14-3), Ocean, pinned Wyatt Staples, TH, at 1:02; lost to Tyler Preble, Nok, 7-4; beat Travis Hutchinson, Buck, 13-12; and beat Riley Micklich, Med, 9-2, in the consolation final. Fogarty finished third.

Riley Micklich (14-5), Med, beat Travis Hutchinson, Buck, 13-6; lost by major decision to Eric Andrews, HAL, 14-2; won by technical fall over Wyatt Staples, TH, 17-0; and lost to Carter Fogarty, Ocean, 9-2, in the consolation final. Micklich finished fourth.

Wyatt Staples (8-6), TH, was pinned by Carter Fogarty, Ocean, at 1:02; pinned Devin Hutcheson, CR, at 3:09; and lost by technical fall to Riley Micklich, Med, 17-0.
