Troy man charged for stalking high school student
Troy — A Troy man is facing a stalking charge after police arrested him on a warrant Friday, Sept. 27.
Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said Ryan Drake, 34, of Troy, was arrested on a warrant the evening of Sept. 27. Police were told that Drake had been attending the student's athletic events, as well as showing up at her place of work for months.
Prior to his arrest, Drake had been banned from the Mount View School complex after staff confronted him when they discovered him hanging out around the building. When staff members asked him what he was doing, Drake was unable to give a valid reason for being at the school, Trafton said.
Trafton said the Regional School Unit 3 school resource officer investigated the complaints against Drake and was able to establish a pattern of conduct, which is needed to determine if a person's behavior can be considered stalking.
Regional School Unit 3 Superintendent Heather Perry said the district was aware of the issues the student was having with Drake prior to the sheriff's office getting involved. She said in cases where a person is bothering a student, staff are notified and the school resource officer keeps track of the issue.
Because Drake was attending the student's athletic events at other schools, the district had to contact the athletic directors at those schools to notify them of the situation, Perry said.
When asked how often the district has to deal with a situation where a person, such as Drake, is bothering a student, Perry said those types of issues are typically few and far between.
“It's one of those things you don't want to see happen, but it does,” Perry said.
Trafton said Drake was released on $1,000 cash bail and he has conditions that prevent him from having any direct or indirect contact with the student at school, at her place of work, her home or at athletic events.
Trafton said Drake does not have any prior offenses in the state but officers are still in the process of checking out of state database records.
