Searsport — A two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Searsport reduced traffic to one lane for a short period of time during the afternoon of Thursday, April 17.

Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said 72-year-old Norma Sawyer, of Searsport, and 52-year-old Masihiro Ichikawa, of Belmont, Mass., were traveling on West Main Street, Route 1, shortly before 3 p.m., when Sawyer stopped to turn left into Searsport Shores Ocean Campground.

Ichikawa told LaHaye his GPS device fell off the dashboard in his vehicle and while attempting to pick it up, he took his eyes off the road and did not see Sawyer's vehicle stopped in front of him.

Ichikawa's 2008 Toyota Corolla slammed into the rear end of Sawyer's 2014 Chevrolet Spark, totaling both vehicles, LaHaye said.

The Chevrolet Spark sustained significant rear end damage and the Toyota Corolla sustained extensive front end damage, LaHaye said.

A witness at the scene told LaHaye Sawyer had her directional signal on to turn left and was waiting for a line of vehicles to pass before turning when Ichikawa rear ended her vehicle.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and Sawyer was taken to Waldo County General Hospital for treatment after complaining of chest pain, LaHaye said. Ichikawa was treated at the scene and released.

Searsport Fire Department and Ambulance assisted at the scene.

LaHaye said no charges would be filed against Ichikawa.
