Unity Barn Raisers hires new executive director
Unity Barn Raisers, a non-profit community betterment organization in Unity, Maine, working to enhance small town character and rural environment while nurturing a thriving community-based economy, is pleased to announce that Jim Perry of Cleveland, Ohio, will become the organization's executive director effective Jan. 14.
Perry will replace Tess Woods, who had been with the Barn Raisers for eleven years — the last seven as executive director. Woods will join the White Mountain School community in Bethlehem, N.H., where her partner has been hired as director of advancement.
“We conducted a thorough search for the right candidate for this position, and we are fortunate that Jim came onto our radar," Dave Smith, Chair of the Board of Directors of UBR, said. "We are confidant that Jim is the person to lead us. I am convinced that his varied and strong background in a myriad of environmental issues, as well as his leadership capacity, will provide the direction and 'get-it-done' attitude we need.”
Perry has served with many environmental and economic development organizations, including the Worldwatch Institute, Green America, American Forests, American Rivers, and with a land-use and water resource preservation group in Cleveland, Ohio, the West Creek Preservation Committee.
“I could not be more pleased to be joining Unity Barn Raisers," Perry said. "My family goes back a long way in Maine, and this is my chance to return to my 'ancestral roots.' This job brings together much of my experience in larger organizations, and yet here is where the work actually gets done, and where the results are apparent on a daily basis. I am looking forward to working with Dave and the rest of the Board to continue the work Tess has done, and to accomplish even more for the Town of Unity.”
