Unity Town News
IN MY WORLD
This weekend in September is always memorable, whether I choose to hide from all the weekend activities (and traffic) or participate. This year I went with the latter, attending the Funky Ryde 2013 BBQ in Unity and the Fair on Sunday. The BBQ was awesome with incredible food, music and really good folk. Sunday started out with a clap of thunder and torrential rains, but they broke by noon so I headed to the fair with Meg Anderson and stocked up on incredible goat soaps and olive oil soaps. Bill built a metal awning area for the goat house, using trees for the structure. It is so cool! The goats are loving being able to hang outside while staying dry, even in the rain. My chickens have stopped laying, so I’ve added a rope light on a timer in the coop, adding a few hours to get them back in the groove of laying. Jason’s Butcher shop called to say our smoked pork order was ready for pickup. We made some of the bacon this weekend. I can’t get over how incredible home grown pork tastes. Mmmm

Waldo County Trails Coalition to Lead Hike

The hike will start at the parking lot of the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust downtown will go to Unity College, through the college trails, along the wooded Coalition trail on the west side of Quaker Hill Rd, and out to Quaker Hill Rd about a mile from the college. A shuttle will be available at Quaker Hill Road to transport people back to downtown Unity at the end of the hike. Among the sites to enjoy along this hike are the beautiful footbridge in downtown Unity, a cedar grove on Woodsong Farm, some monstrous old sugar maples (some home to porcupines) and the old Roberts homestead site. Evidence of wildlife is also common. The Waldo County Trails Coalition is a group of nine organizations working to link 40-plus miles of existing trails in order to create a continuous "Hills-to-Sea Trail" from Unity to Belfast.
