Varsity boys, alumnae girls prevail in Mustang games

Thorndike — The Mount View High School boys and girls varsity soccer squads experienced their first warm-up games of the season Aug. 18 with the Mustangs' annual alumni games, with graduates taking to the pitch against this year's student-athletes.

The Mustang boys varsity picked up a 5-3 victory over the alumni, while the alumnae nipped the Mustang girls varsity 6-5.

Members of the alumnae included Kali McCarthy (Class of 1996), Alexis Bennett (2009), Caitlin Kupferman (2008), Ashley Pillsbury (2005), Breana Bennett (2008) and Amanda Larrabee (2012).

Members of the alumni included Aaron Elkins (2012), Cody Downer (2012), Nic Stewart (2012), Connor Schmidt (2010), Nathan Howe (2008), Peter Kang (2010), Wayne Doughty (1990), Darren Doughty (1990), Mike Cochrane (2010) and Zach Mehuren (2011).

In the girls game, the alumnae took a 3-1 lead at the half, but the varsity battled back late as Mikell Grant creased the net with 10:52 left to tie the game 4-4. The game was knotted 5-5 late in the contest, while alumnae Kupferman scored her fourth goal of the game with 1:36 remaining to clinch the victory.

Pillsbury and McCarthy also creased the net for the alumnae, while Megan Elkins, Jessica Stewart, Mary Picard, Grant and Suzanna Miller all scored goals for the varsity. Larrabee was in net for the alumnae, while Makayla Ellis and Grant each minded the goal for the varsity.

In the boys game, the contest was knotted 3-3 at the half, but the varsity got a pair of second-half goals and distanced itself from the alumni to pick up the two-goal victory.

Elkins creased the net twice for the alumni and Wentworth added one, while Trevor Diemer and Brody Gibbs each scored twice for the varsity and Lorenzo Milani once.

Mikey Hustus played goal for the varsity, while Dale Hustus and girls varsity soccer coach David Page minded the net for the alumni.
