Belfast — My name is Shawn Adams, and I have been a resident at the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center in Belfast for the last several months.

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Tanya Mitchell, a reporter at The Republican Journal. We sat down for some coffee, and I told her about my past, present and my hopes for the future. The article was very well written, and it was very well received.

So it is through a series of fortunate events that I am able to present this new column, which is dedicated, but not confined, to the many different things that go on at the reentry center.

I will discuss the kinds of community services that are preformed by the residents, and the responses we receive from those who benefit from the various services we provide on a daily basis.

From time to time I will also interview my fellow residents about their personal stories and about their progress, speak with graduates to find out how their lives are going since returning back to their respective communities, and talk with members of the public about their thoughts and ideas on the program.

There are many different working parts that help to make the reentry center successful. Some of the residents perform community service, some find employment and others attend classes through the local adult education programs to further their education in preparation for their release.

I think it's important that all of these people are recognized for their contributions to helping residents enter back into the community. It is also important for the public to be aware of what kinds of things the reentry center is involved in, and what our goals are.

A lot of people are unaware of the positive changes that are being made here on a daily basis. Of course, there are negative things that happen here as well, but I have chosen to keep this column focused on the positive things that go on, and I am looking forward to keeping the community informed about all the good things that can and have come out of the program.
