Waldo County caps title run with extra-inning win over Rockland

Remaining squads play seven strong innings before championship decided

Warren — The Waldo County Little League 9- and 10-year-old baseball all stars captured the District 2 crown Sunday afternoon, July 8 with a hard-fought 12-8, 7-inning win over Rockland.

Waldo County finished the double-elimination tournament 3-0 and will move on to the state tournament, which begins on Saturday, July 14 in Scarborough.

Waldo County will face District 5 on Saturday, July 14 at 1 p.m. If Waldo County wins, it will play on Sunday, July 15. If it loses, it will play on Tuesday, July 17. Times for those contests were unavailable.

Waldo County dominated its first two games in the district tourney, but had its hands full with Rockland on Sunday, needing extra innings to pull away. Rockland tied the game in the bottom of the sixth stanza before Waldo County's powerful bats resulted in a five-run seventh, essentially putting the game out of reach.

Rockland finished with a strong 4-2 record during the district tourney.

All previous games in the tournament were played on Val Picinich Field in Nobleboro. On the championship was in Warren.

Waldoboro, Lincoln County and Knox Suburban finished 1-2 and Camden-Rockport 0-2 in the tourney.

Leading Waldo County at the plate in Sunday's championship encounter were Kergan Perkins (2 singles, 2 runs), Colby Snow (single, run), Daegan Moody (2 triples, 2 runs), Riley Boulay (triple), Wyatt Harriman (double, single, run), Charlie Spiegel (double, 2 runs) and Ethan Quimby (double, single, 2 runs).

For Rockland, Trevor Reed (2 singles, 2 runs), Ben Ripley (single, double, 2 runs), Karl Ilvonen (single, 2 runs), Jude Forti (run) and Will Eaton (run) paced the offense.

Boulay, Harriman and Perkins pitched for Waldo County, walking 12 batters and fanning 17. Cole Stevens and Ilvonen worked the hill for Rockland, walking seven and fanning seven. Harriman earned the pitching win on his birthday.

Rockland managed to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ilvonen reached on a bunt single and came in to score on a wild pitch.

Waldo County then plated five runs in the top of the seventh behind five hits and a walk from various batters, essentially putting the game out of reach.

Rockland cut its deficit to 12-8 after Reed singled and came in on an RBI-double by Ripley in the bottom of the seventh, but Rockland could get no closer.

Team members for Waldo County include Spiegel, Perkins, Matthew Southard, Boulay, Snow, Stanhope, Quimby, Harriman, Moody, Hayden Hunt, Tanner Veilleux and Alex Fountain. The team is managed by Adam Perkins and coached by Roddy Ronco and Darrin Moody.

Team members for Rockland include Everett Allyn, Eaton, Forti, Ilvonen, Jason LeBlond, Abe LeMole, Carson Murphy, Austin Pagano, Logan Putansu, Reed, Ripley, Stevens and Tyler Sukeforth. The team is managed by John Murphy and coached by Russell Stevens. The scorekeeper is Davin Putansu.

At Nobleboro July 5, the Waldo County bats came to life and sparked a few big innings en route to a 15-run victory over Waldoboro.

Leading Waldo County at the plate were Perkins (hit, 2 runs), Snow (hit, 2 runs), Boulet (2 hits, run), Harriman (2 hits, 2 runs), Spiegel (2 hits, run), Quimby (2 hits, 2 runs), Hayden Hunt (hit, run) and Michael Stanhope (hit).

Boulay and Perkins combined for a no-hitter on the hill for Waldo County, walking four and striking out 11. C.J. Sproul pitched for Waldoboro.

Waldo County 10, Lincoln County 0 (4 inns.)

At Nobleboro July 1, Waldo County kicked off the tournament in style with a convincing win over Lincoln County. Boulay and Harriman combined to toss a no-hitter, while the team rapped eight hits in the win.

Leading Waldo County at the plate were Perkins (hit, 2 runs), Moody (hit, run), Boulay (hit, run), Harriman (hit, 2 runs), Speigel (hit, run), Quimby (2 hits, run) and Stanhope (hit).

Boulay and Harriman combined to walk three and strike out 13 on the hill for Waldo County.
