Waldo County officials set mil rate for 2014

By Ben Holbrook | Feb 25, 2014

A number of Waldo County towns will see a slight reduction in their taxes for this year due to decreased state valuations, while the commissioners set the mil rate at $1.72 per $1,000 of valuation.

The mil rate is up slightly from last year's rate of $1.70, but based on state valuations, 14 of the 26 municipalities in the county will pay less in taxes for 2014 than they paid in 2013. According to numbers provided by the county commissioner's office, Belfast, Belmont, Brooks, Freedom, Islesboro, Lincolnville, Morrill, Palermo, Searsmont, Searsport, Stockton Springs, Swanville, Waldo and Winterport will see a reduction in their county taxes.

The towns of Burnham, Frankfort, Jackson, Knox, Liberty, Monroe, Montville, Northport, Prospect, Thorndike, Troy and Unity will see a slight increase in their county taxes.

In December, county officials approved $7,994,191, a decrease of more than 2 percent compared to the 2013 budget.

County Commission Chairman Bill Shorey previously told The Republican Journal the county was able to save money on its health insurance premiums. The county also saved money by choosing to purchase its technology equipment as opposed to leasing it.
