Waldoboro — A car crash on Route 1 claimed one life Saturday afternoon, June 16, according to Waldoboro police.

Florence Bryant, 81, of Belfast died when the Buick Century she was riding in was hit from behind by a Chevy 1500 pickup.

Florence Bryant's husband, Richard Bryant, 75, was driving the Buick south on Route 1 in Waldoboro near Country Kitchen at 2:30 p.m. He had slowed to make a left turn.

The 2004 Chevy 1500 truck rear-ended the Buick, according to Waldoboro police. The truck was driven by Andrew Chapman, 35, of Waldoboro. He was traveling with his wife and child.

Richard Bryant was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital by Waldoboro EMS. He was later flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center. Andrew Chapman and his wife and child were transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by Waldoboro EMS.

Florence Bryant succumbed to her injuries at the scene, according to police.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chad Gilbert, an accident reconstructionist, helped with the investigation, which continues.

Route 1 was closed for several hours as Waldoboro fire, police and EMS units responded to the accident.

This is the second fatal accident on Route 1 in just over a week. A Portland woman died June 8 near the intersection of Route 235.

Maybe Chapman was speeding, maybe not. The accident investigators will figure it all out. If you have information that makes it "probable that he was going like a bat out of Hell", you should share that with the investigator.

rumor has it that excessive speed was the cause though the article doesn't mention it. that is such a straight and wide stretch of road...it does seem probable that he was going like a bat out of hell.
