Perhaps one of the most emotional topics of the Camden Conference Discussion Series, “What’s the Truth about GM Foods?” will begin on December 12th at 6:30pm at the Rockland Public library. The facilitators of this discussion have put together articles and videos that represent both sides of this subject. These are listed on the Camden Conference website or actual copies are available at each library.
In September The Camden Conference, through its Community Events Committee, launched the new Discussion Series. The Discussion Series “Join the Conversation” is much like a book group but with far less preparation.
The five topics that are being covered by the Discussion Series provide a means of preparing for attending the 27th Camden Conference, The Global Politics of Food and Water, February 21 to 23, 2014. The Discussion Series allows you to be involved in a conversation about very serious topics with others who share your concerns.
A local person who is not an expert in the field facilitates the groups. However, the facilitators have done substantial work to prepare to be your guide during the discussions. If you are interested in any of the topics but unable to attend either the discussion groups or the conference, you could learn about these important issues by visiting the Camden Conference website to read the articles and or view the videos that have been collected on each topic.
We encourage young people to attend these discussions and to become involved, as you are the ones who will feel the major impact of the subject matter of all five topics going forward.
The articles and videos are listed below, or you may click here to download the complete reading list. Alternatively, a reading copy of the essential articles will be available at the library circulation desk.
GM Foods will have two more discussions, one in Camden and one in Belfast. You still have an opportunity to discuss Fresh Water Scarcity in Camden, Oceans at Risk in Belfast and Impact of Climate Change on War and Conflict in Belfast and Rockland. The full calendar of events is published on the Camden Conference website, in the Free Press, on Village Soup and The Pen Bay Pilot, Camden Herald, Courier Gazette, Republican Journal, and each library’s website calendar.
