SOUTH THOMASTON — This old newspaper clipping appeared in my living room the other day, as if by magic! It is an editorial published in the Courier-Gazette on October 10, 1995. It was on page four of Tuesday's issue, but I have no idea of who the editor was at that time?

The title is "Sense of community", and IT IS TERRIFIC! It tells about the repairs being done to the Finnish Congregational Church by volunteers...18 years ago! I doubt if everyone can read the fine print above, so I will reprint it for you here.

.............................................................................................................................

There are many forces at work these days, tearing communities apart and sowing unrest between neighbors. On the other hand there are many forces at work for the good of communities, bringing them together and accomplishing much.

For several months the Finnish-American Society has quietly been working to repair the Finnish Congregational Church in South Thomaston, and we think this is a good thing. Not only have members of this group been cleaning and painting, but some have chosen to enter into the community of the small church. A board has been appointed, a lay pastor named, and a sense of life and energy restored to the congregation.

And for two years or more, the society itself has been cultivating a sense of community for people of Finnish descent living in this area. The spreading success of the society is indicated by the fact that the current president lives in Brunswick.

We need more things in our society that give people common cause, a sense of fellowship, and an idea of what they can give to the community.

..............................................................................................................................

It is my hope that everyone involved with ALL of our current organizations can seriously RECONSIDER the future of our historic church sanctuary.

I have it from a reliable source that the original editorial was written at the Courier-Gazette in 1995 by Michael McGuire.
