William C. Gatchell Jr.
William C. Gatchell Jr. passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on July 9, 2014. He was born June 4, 1939, in the same home he lived in most of his adult life.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sarah "Sally" M. Gatchell, his two sons Steven M. and wife Mary Gatchell, and Wayne C. Gatchell. He was predeceased by his parents William C. Gatchell Sr. and Arlene Dow, grandmother Elsie "Nana" Young, and brother-in-law George Gonsalves.
Grandchildren include Heather L. Gatchell, April and husband Adam Burke, Breanna J. Gatchell, Garrett W. and wife Tammy Gatchell, and Audrey E. Gatchell; three great-grand children, Farrah M. Faulkingham, Ava Rae Burke, and Paige E. Gatchell.
He leaves sister-in-law Jean Gonsalves, special brother-in-law Phillip "Butchy" and wife Shirley Osle, and sister-in-law Cathy "Citty" and husband Andre Sonnenburg. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.
He graduated from Crosby High in Belfast in 1958. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, was a 32nd degree Mason in Belfast, member of the Waldo County Shrine Club, and former president of the Pitcher Pond Camp Owners Association.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1999 after 27 years and worked for Dean Brown Construction of Monroe for 11 years.
William was laid to rest on July 14 at Grove Cemetery in Belfast with a wonderfully performed grave side service by friend and brother Mason Martin Page.
In lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes may make a donation in his name to any of the above mentioned organizations, Cancer Care of Maine, or the Oncology department at Waldo County General Hospital.
