Winter exhibitions open at Waterfall Arts
Belfast — Two new shows will open with a 5 to 8 p.m. reception Friday, Feb. 7, at Waterfall Arts, 256 High St. The opening will be followed at 8 p.m. by a concert by The Coloradas and Asa Irons.
“Library,” a large installation by Abbie Read, will grace the Clifford Gallery. Fresh from the 2013 Portland Biennial and still expanding, “Library” covers an entire wall and then some. It is a dense, three-dimensional wall collage of book art; Read incorporates found objects to create ephemeral imagery, bringing poems or text passages to life. Visitors are encouraged to take their time perusing this “Library,” which will be open during office hours: Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., by chance or appointment.
“Denizens,” a group show by habitués of Waterfall Arts, will be on display in the Corridor Gallery during the same time period. Contributors include the art center’s tenants, staff, instructors and volunteers who are also painters, photographers, printmakers, ceramicists and assemblage artists. The self-selected work celebrates the diversity of art made by the denizens of the building including Allison Rector, Mike Fletcher, Alan Crichton, Jaap Helder and others.
Waterfall Arts is dedicated to creating community in harmony with nature through the transformative power of the arts and offers art classes and workshops for all ages, exhibitions, studio rentals and community events. For more information, visit waterfallarts.org or call 338-2222.
