'Writing with Nature' workshop at Unitarian Universalist Church
Belfast — The Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast is offering a free workshop, "Writing with Nature," on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., running May 1 to 15. This three-week class will be led by Linda Buckmaster and is open to all writers or wannabe writers of any level who will write new poetry, prose, or something in between. Space is limited, and registration by April 30 is required.
For many of us, relating to the natural world is an important part of our lives, affirming our connection to the interdependent web of creation. Writing can help us not only express ourselves but to also discover more about our subject and ourselves as we deepen our relationship to both.
We will have brief discussions on craft and use the work of other writers for inspiration. We will do writing exercises and take advantage of the lengthening days to do some of our writing en plein air. As weather and mobility allow, we may visit the beach, the woods, a local garden, and the side yard of the UU church. The first class meeting is at the church.
We'll maintain a safe, supportive environment that recognizes there is no such thing as a mistake in writing, just the next draft. Buckmaster is a writer and poet who is a former Poet Laureate of Belfast and a founding member of the UU church. She holds an MFA from the University of Southern Maine, and her poetry, essay, fiction, and journalism have been published in regional and national journals.
