Young Searsport looks to improve on previous campaign

By Staff | Dec 07, 2012

Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Searsport District High School girls varsity basketball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Mel Grant, second year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 2-16, 16th in Eastern Class C. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Juniors Alicen Brooks (forward), Dana Cook (guard), Kelli Gibbs (guard), Briana Grant (guard), Libby Lane (forward) and Allison Walker (forward); sophomores Brianna Boyle (forward), Alivia Cross (guard), Chauntelle Gillo (forward), Katie McFarland (forward), Alexandria Narthup (forward), Rochelle Stone (guard) and Brittany Ward (guard); and freshmen Anna Bucklin (guard) and Melinda Ogden (forward).

Outlook: Winning only two games last year, the Vikings can look up this season in hopes of improving on their previous record. However, Searsport still has a ways to go to climb up the rungs of the Eastern Class C ladder and into the playoff picture.

Grant, the coach's daughter, is the team's best all-around player. She is a guard who can both shoot and penetrate to the basket; while Ogden, a freshmen, also will log considerable minutes and had a stellar preseason game against Narraguagus, tossing in 15 of the team's 34 points. Searsport has talent, but will have to work hard for victories in Eastern Class C.
